Last of the Merrimac.

The pet of all rebeldom, the Merrimac, has committed the Japanese hari kari act of mattrydom, and condignly "gone up!" How sad to think that this wonderful craft, whose debut on the stage of action created such an astonishing sensation throughout the civilized world, should have enjoyed so short a life and gone out in dark eclipse in less than three months after her first (and last) achievement! Her life was "short and merry."

With the Merrimac safely disposed of the way is doubtless open for our vessels to sail up the James river to Richmond. The land force is already far on the road, and the traitor capital must soon fall, perhaps before another sunset.

Gloriously is Secretary Stanton carrying out his policy to "attack, pursue, and destroy" the enemy.
